How to prepare for your newborn session | Ottawa newborn photographer

It is always an honor and a privilege to be chosen to photograph a newborn baby.   I want this experience to be enjoyable and as stress free as possible for you and your baby. Here are some tips to help you get prepared.

1. When should I schedule my newborn photography session?

It is always best to book your newborn session ahead of time, preferably at your maternity session or during the last trimester of your pregnancy. Scheduling ahead of time is important so that I can accommodate your session in my busy schedule and keep my workload manageable around your due date. I will be able to “pencil” you in my calendar according to your estimated due date and then firm up your date/time upon baby’s arrival

2. How old should baby be?

Newborn sessions are best during the first few weeks of life, preferably between 5-20 days old. They can be done later, however older babies schedules are unpredictable and can be harder to get those sleepy baby poses. During the first 10 days, baby is usually very sleepy and still have that newborn curl that makes them easier to pose.

3. How long will the newborn photo session last?

Newborn sessions are approximately 2-3 hours long however every baby is unique and have different needs.  For best results, baby should be settled and content which can sometimes take a bit more time. While some babies may need to cluster feed or snuggle more, some sleep through the entire session without even waking up. It is important to schedule your session accordingly and not plan anything before or afterwards to allow sufficient time for the session.

4. What should we wear?

Most of my newborn images are done with baby in a knit outfit, swaddle or naked which are provided by the Studio. For what to wear for Mom, dad and sibling(s) neutral tones work best  and avoid too many bold patterns or logos which can be distracting in final images.

5. Where do the newborn sessions take place?

Newborn sessions take place in my home Studio in Vars, ON.  My studio is fully equipped with tons of beautiful handmade props and sets for your baby.  My clients have access to variety of snacks, water/juice and WiFi and a private sanitized bathroom.

6. Before you leave for your session

Although newborns aren’t generally on schedules yet, please try to feed baby before you leave for your session.  Also bathing your baby in warm bath will help make for a clean and sleepy baby.  The car ride will likely put baby in a deep sleep right before their arrival to the studio.

CHECK LIST:

  • Diapers and wipes
  • Bottle
  • Parent and sibling outfits (shoes, brush, elastic, etc)
  • Pacifier (optional but very helpful)
  • Sleeper
  • Baby blanket
  • nursing pillow (if needed)
  • Personal item or heirloom you wish to use for the session
  • Other useful items for sibling (iPad, books, snacks, sippy cut, toys).

6. Housekeeping rules

No cameras or filming allowed during your session. We understand this is a momentous time in your life and I want to capture those beautiful photos for you. Sit back and enjoy your session.

Only Immediate family can attend the session. Too many people can be distracting and take too much room in my small studio.
